Residential Neurorehabilitation Centre

NEUROREHABILITATION: BACKGROUND

A neurorehabilitation solution designed to achieve life-changing outcomes for adults with neurological conditions resulting from injury, illness or disease.

  • 348,934 UK admissions to hospital with acquired brain injury (ABI) in 2013- 14.
  • 162,544 admissions for head injury. That equates to 445 every day, or one every three minutes.
  • In 2013-14, there were 130,551 UK admissions for stroke.
  • 12.5 million neurology cases in England.
  • The NHS spent £3.3 billion on neurological services in 2012-13.
  • Shortfall of 10000 beds per annum in the UK residential neurorehabilitation.
Multi disciplinary neurorehabilitation improves function, reduces the risk of complications, creates a better chance of returning home, rather than placement in a nursing home, and also offers a better opportunity for employment If rehabilitation is not performed adequately or early enough individuals are likely to have:

• Increased care levels
• Increased accommodation costs
• Missed opportunities to return to some form of work

Any scheme that facilitates a good quality rehabilitation programme sooner rather than later would be of significant benefit to the client, the family and the economy as a whole.Professor Michael P Barnes MD FRCP

Thank you for letting me see this project idea. I can certainly confirm, as Chair of UKABIF and of INPA, that there is a clear need for more neurorehabilitation facilities in the UK. There is a shortfall of about 10,000 beds with about 4000 beds provided in the NHS and independent sectors combined and a conservative demand estimate of 14000 beds per annum. The independent sector now accounts for about 60% of beds and the NHS 40%, with the former increasing and the latter decreasing. In the North West there is a particular shortfall with an even worse under- provision than the rest of the UK. Thus I can confirm the need for this type of facility in the area. I very much like the idea of combining the centre with the legal expertise on site or nearby. I really hope the project succeeds.

Best wishes, Mike Barnes
